A Guide to Discernment and Service in the Episcopal Diocese of Idaho
The Discernment Journey
The path to ordination is a prayerful, structured journey undertaken in community. It begins with an individual's sense of call and is guided by the parish, the Commission on Ministry (COM), and the Bishop.
From Inquiry to Ordination
Phase 1: Parish Discernment
Meet with parish priest/warden.
Parish leader & candidate meet the Bishop.
A Local Discernment Committee is formed.
LDC reports to Vestry, who sends recommendation to Bishop.
Phase 2: Diocesan Discernment
With a 'yay' vote, candidate meets the COM.
Psychological evaluation is completed.
Bishop recommends a seminary.
Phase 3: Formation
Nominee is raised to Postulant status.
Begins studies, writes Ember Letters, meets with COM.
Maintains a relationship with a Spiritual Director.
A program to be completed before ordination.
Phase 4: Ordination & Curation
Ordained to Diaconate (Transitional or Vocational).
Upon completion of requirements, may be ordained to Priesthood.
A two-year mentoring and formation program begins.
A Network of Support
No one walks the path to ministry alone. The Diocese provides a robust network of support, including dedicated personnel, spiritual guidance, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
Ideal Timeline
The entire process takes a minimum of 4 years, with the initial parish and diocesan discernment phase lasting approximately 14 months.

Several key individuals are assigned to guide and companion discernees through the process.
LDC Composition
- ✓ 5+ Members (Odd Numbers)
- ✓ Includes diverse parish members
- ✓ May include a non-parishioner
- ✗ Parish Rector/Priest-in-Charge
- ✗ Senior Warden
Spiritual Direction
Required throughout the entire process and after ordination to ensure spiritual health and accountability.
